Maze routing 101: bend the path, win the wave

Maze routing 101: bend the path, win the wave

May 5, 2026 · Markus Feldmann

The most common mistake I see in tower defence is treating towers like decorations you sprinkle everywhere. The real skill is routing: forcing enemies to walk the longest, most exposed path possible before they reach your base.

Start by mapping the entrances and exits in your head before you build anything. A single tower placed to create a U-turn can double the time enemies spend inside your kill zone. That extra time is worth more than raw damage upgrades early on.

Save some currency for adjustments. Games like Bastion of Nine Gates reward you for moving one tower after seeing the first wave, rather than committing to a layout blind. Flexibility wins levels.

Finally, watch which enemy types ignore your maze. Flyers and burrowers break routing plans, so keep a small pool of resources ready to answer them. Plan the maze, but never fall in love with it.
